Zalma, Missouri

Zalma, once known as Bollinger's Mill, is a town on the banks of the winding Castor River at a point where the river makes a horseshoe bend in southern Bollinger County in southeast Missouri. When the railroad moved to town, the name Bollinger's Mill was changed to Zalma, after railroad worker Zalma Block.[6] Zalma is also said to come from a Native American word meaning "the end." As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Zalma had a population of 122.

Zalma is part of the Cape Girardeau−Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Zalma is home to a number of state parks that feature a number of activities such as deer hunting, fishing, bird watching, horseback riding, and hiking. Blue Pond, the deepest natural pond in the state of Missouri, is located outside of Zalma.

In 1800, an Urban Asherbranner (or Asherbramer or Asherbrauner) settled on the upper portion of the Castor River, just where the river empties its waters into Mingo Bottom, and where the village of Zalma is now situated, built a log and brush dam and erected a water mill to grind corn. Philip Bollinger settled nearby.[6][7]

Winona, Missouri

Winona is characterized by four distinct seasons and is located in a humid continental climate, as defined by the Köppen climate classification system. Winona tends to be exceptionally humid in the late summer. The monthly daily average temperature ranges from 13 °F (−11 °C) in January to 77 °F (25 °C) in July. On average, there are 41 days with highs over 90 °F (32 °C), three with highs over 100 °F (38 °C), 68 days where the temperature does not rise above freezing, and 19 nights of sub-0 °F (−18 °C) lows.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,335 people, 529 households, and 358 families residing in the city. The population density was 350.4 inhabitants per square mile (135.3/km2). There were 595 housing units at an average density of 156.2 per square mile (60.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.93% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 1.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.50% of the population.

There were 529 households of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02.

Winston, Missouri

Winston was originally called Crofton's Depot, and under the latter name was laid out in 1871 when the railroad was extended to that point.[6] Other early variant names were "Winstonville" and "Emporia".[7] The present name is after F. K. Winston, a railroad official.[6] A post office called Winstonville was established in 1872, the name was changed to Emporia in 1879, and changed once more to Winston in 1885.[8]

Winston has a humid continental climate with very cold, snowy winters, and warm-to-hot, wet and humid summers in which much of the seasonal precipitation falls as thunderstorms. The hottest recorded temperature is 106 °F on August 19, 2003, while the record low temperature is −23 °F on December 23, 1989. Temperatures drop below freezing (32 °F) on an average of 100 days a year. Sub-zero Fahrenheit temperatures occur on average 7 days per year. Temperatures reach 90 °F or higher on an average of 24 days a year, and temperatures over 100 °F four days a year.[citation needed]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 259 people, 95 households, and 69 families residing in the village. The population density was 835.5 inhabitants per square mile (322.6/km2). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 358.1 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 1.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

Wright City, Missouri

Wright City is a city in Warren County, Missouri, United States. It is located on Interstate 70 at mile marker 200 approximately 50 miles (80 km) west of downtown St. Louis. Wright City is a small, semi-rural community area with primarily single-family housing, with some multi-family dwellings. The population was 3,119 at the 2010 census. It has a number of small stores and restaurants. It has various types of light to heavy industrial businesses.

Wright City is located at 38°49′40″N 91°1′27″W / 38.82778°N 91.02417°W / 38.82778; -91.02417 (38.827878, -91.024280).[11] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.06 square miles (15.70 km2), of which, 5.97 square miles (15.46 km2) is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 km2) is water.[2]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 3,119 people, 1,178 households, and 823 families residing in the city. The population density was 522.4 inhabitants per square mile (201.7/km2). There were 1,288 housing units at an average density of 215.7 per square mile (83.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.0% White, 5.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 3.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.2% of the population.

Wyaconda, Missouri

Wyaconda is a city in Clark County, Missouri, United States. The population was 227 at the 2010 census. The city was organized in 1888 and is named after a Siouan name for God or the Great Spirit.[6] The first land purchased from the Santa Fe and Land Co. was in 1888.

At the 2010 census,[2] there were 227 people, 108 households and 63 families in the city. The population density was 354.7 inhabitants per square mile (137.0/km2). There were 140 housing units at an average density of 218.8 per square mile (84.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.2% White and 1.8% from two or more races.

There were 108 households of which 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.7% were non-families. 38.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.76.

Theodosia, Missouri

A post office called Theodosia has been in operation since 1886.[6] Some say the community has the name of Theodosia Herd, the wife of an early postmaster, while others believe another postmaster gave the community the name of his daughter, Theodosia Kirby.[7]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.57 square miles (4.07 km2), of which, 1.37 square miles (3.55 km2) of it is land and 0.20 square miles (0.52 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 243 people, 122 households, and 68 families residing in the village. The population density was 177.4 inhabitants per square mile (68.5/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 165.0 per square mile (63.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.94% White and 2.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.41% of the population.

Iyanla Vanzant

Iyanla Vanzant (born Rhonda Eva Harris; September 13, 1953) is an American inspirational speaker, lawyer, New Thought spiritual teacher, author, life coach and television personality. She is known primarily for her books, her eponymous talk show, and her appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She can currently be seen on television as the host of Iyanla: Fix My Life,[1] on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

Vanzant was born on September 13, 1953, in the back of a taxi in Brooklyn, New York, as Rhonda Eva Harris. She is the daughter of Sarah Jefferson, a railroad car maid, and Horace Harris, who was largely absent from her life. Her mother died from breast cancer in 1955, when Vanzant was two years old. She was then raised by paternal relatives, one of whom raped her at the age of nine. Her first husband was physically abusive, and she left him in 1980, taking her three children with her.[2] In 1983, she was given the title "Iyanla", which means "great mother", after being initiated and ordained as a priestess in the Yoruba tradition (as mentioned in her television interview on the Conn Jackson show). She attended Medgar Evers College and Virginia Union University. Vanzant holds a Juris Doctor degree from the City University of New York School of Law. She currently resides in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.[3] She is also an ordained New Thought minister.[4]

In 2000, she was named one of the "100 most influential Black Americans" by Ebony magazine, which said that "Her books, lectures and television appearances have made her a multimedia high priestess of healthy relationships."[5] In 2012, Vanzant was listed at #7 on Watkins' Mind Body Spirit magazine list of the 100 most spiritually influential living people."[6] In 2014, she was co-speaker in Oprah's the "Life You Want Weekend" tour, which travelled to eight cities, also featuring Deepak Chopra, Mark Nepo, Elizabeth Gilbert and Rob Bell.[7] In 2016, Vanzant was named to Oprah Winfrey's SuperSoul100 list of visionaries and influential leaders.[8]

Wellington, Missouri

In November 2013, Leland Ray Kolkmeyer pled guilty, in federal court, of a fraud scheme in which he embezzled more than $1.5 million from Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District and Special Road District while being their former treasurer.[8][9][10]

Wellington is located at 39°08′00″N 93°59′06″W / 39.133360°N 93.985049°W / 39.133360; -93.985049.[11] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.13 square miles (2.93 km2), of which 1.09 square miles (2.82 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[1]

Wellington lies just a few miles east of Napoleon, Missouri, the two towns having been named after the commanders at the Battle of Waterloo. Approximately halfway between the two towns lies a small, unincorporated crossroads called "Waterloo".

Thornfield, Missouri

Thornfield is an unincorporated community in Ozark County, Missouri.[1] It is 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Gainesville. It is located on Route 95 at the Little North Fork of the White River on the edge of the Mark Twain National Forest between Wasola to the northeast and Longrun to the southwest.[2][3]Hammond, the site of the historic Hammond Mill,[4] lies on the Little North Fork 2.5 miles (4.0 km) southeast of Thornfield. Although it is unincorporated, Thornfield has a post office with ZIP code 65762.[5]

Verona, Missouri

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 619 people, 206 households, and 146 families residing in the city. The population density was 711.5 inhabitants per square mile (274.7/km2). There were 239 housing units at an average density of 274.7 per square mile (106.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 1.5% Native American, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 27.9% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 45.7% of the population.

There were 206 households of which 45.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.1% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.68.

The median age in the city was 30.7 years. 33.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.1% were from 25 to 44; 19.6% were from 45 to 64; and 12% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 50.4% male and 49.6% female.
